Three Friends Every New Mom Should Have.

"What my girlfriends taught me about motherhood".

We'd just moved to a new area when I had my first baby.  Most of my current friends had children a lot older or none at all.  They were off working and continuing on with their lives.  My husband was super supportive, but like my friends he was working all day.  I loved being a new mom, but I found I was longing for adult interaction during the day.  I started to feel isolated.  Everything changed three months into motherhood when I joined a group for new mothers.  It was one of the best things I could have done.  My "mommy friends" have been invaluable to me, we've helped each other through that first year.  I know I've made some life-long friends, here's how they've inspired me and why I needed them...

The Elastic Mommy
I call her this because she snaps right back (both physically and mentally) to her former self so quickly after pregnancy.  This mom is in her size two jeans and manolo heels in no time.  She usually has the trendiest diaper bag and is already back at the gym.  Why you need her:  She will remind you that you're not only a new mom, your still a woman.  A high heel wearing, pedicure loving woman!   This mommy friend always orders a salad, which motivates me to order a salad (instead of that burger I was craving).  Lesson she taught me:  Even though your a  new mom, it's no reason to let yourself go.  Your still a woman and you want to look/feel good!  Don't lose who you were before becoming "mommy".  If you loved wearing high heels and working out, keep doing that (it's okay to make time for yourself).  If you're happy with how you look and feel, you will be a better mom and wife.  Happy mommy = happy baby.

The Last Minute Mommy
This friend is the one you call for a last minute play-date, walk or trip to Starbucks.  She's game for anything.  She doesn't need an hour to pack her diaper bag and get the baby ready for an excursian.  This mom makes it all look so easy.  Some new mother's make trips out with a newborn seem like such hard work.  This mommy puts her baby in the bjorn, sling or moby wrap and is good to go!  Why you need her:  She's  a true life saver when you need some adult conversation.  Lesson she taught me:  Yes, having a newborn is hard work, but it can also be a lot of fun!  Get out with your baby, the more you do the easier it will get.

The Super Mommy
Usually this mommy has a child older than yours, but not always.  She just might be so well researched and organized that she just seems like she's been doing this forever.  She usually has all the newest baby gear and always has everything in her well-organized, super functional diaper bag.  Why you need here:  This is your go-to friend when you have questions or need a little affirmation.  The lesson she taught me:  It's okay to ask for help and advice from your friends.  It might not always work, but sometimes you just need a sounding board before figuring out what's right for you and your baby.

Spring is here!  A time for BBQ’s, playing in the park and going barefoot (or at least digging out those flip flops)!  In California we are lucky enough to have pretty mild weather all year round, but there is just something special about spring: The flowers, the sunshine, longer days and the Easter Bunny are all reasons why I love this time of year.  Spring is definitely a time to get outside with the family.  To kick off Spring, I thought I would share some of my favorite spring activities.

Living Desert Zoo & Gardens

47900 Portola Avenue
Palm Desert, CA 92260-6156
(760) 346-5694

I wanted to share a great idea for a fun little day trip that your kid's will love!

Last weekend we took a trip out to Palm Springs for lunch and then decided to visit the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert (15 minutes from Palm Springs).  The Living Desert Zoo is a wildlife and botanical park showcasing over 40 animal species living in their natural desert habitat.  This place is amazing!  We we saw mountain lions, zebras, bobcats, coyotes, cheetas, foxes and more.

My two year old daughter loved looking at all the animals and especially the petting zoo located in African Village WaTuTu.  What I found interesting about this zoo is how naturally the animal exhibits fit into the surrounding environment.  There are great hiking trails and the exhibits are actually set amongst the botanical gardens filled with desert flora.  If you get tired of walking, you can ride the tram that loops around the park (for a small fee).

Botanical Gardens
Animal Exhibits
G Scale Model Train
African Village WaTuTu
Animal Chats
Animal Hospital
And More!

They have a wider variety of daily activities.

Hours: 9:00 - 5:00pm
Admission:  Adults $12.50; Children (3 - 12) $7.50
Children under 3 are free!

This was a very fun and educational trip and I'm sure we will be future visitors to the Living Desert Zoo.

Here are a few photos from out trip.
